Simona Halep had to leave the China Open at round 2 after losing to Ekaterina Alexandrova with the score 2-6 3-6 and is expected to seek medical treatment for her back injury right after the tournament. Venus Williams was also eliminated from the tournament with a 6-3 3-6 5-7 defeat against Belinda Bencic.
