I think that all of us in our short life, have enjoyed some videogame made with RPG Maker. Rather, I can even rephrase and add, that RPG Maker is the engine for game creation that many of us use with the illusion of becoming creators of our own work, in order to be recognised. I'm not ashamed to admit it, I was one of those many but I never managed to achieve my goal because I didn't know how to program the events to give life to the adventure, I remember doing something about Naruto, having adapted some sprites and grabbing others to make the village of Konoha, it wasn't much but it was honest work, although in the end I didn't achieve anything (and I tried several times during different periods). In the beginnings of Let's Play on YouTube, games made with RPG Maker were quite popular, so much so that even PewDiePie himself got to play several of them, obviously then the fashion was spreading and Spanish-speaking youtubers also began to play, but from one moment to another at its peak simply disappeared from the map. So the following doubts arise: were they really good? What is the reason for their disappearance?
When we talk about RPG Maker we also refer to a genre of videogames, and if you always want to play something with almost identical mechanics from game to game, you're in the right place. RPG Maker was mainly used for the creation of obviously "indie" horror games, from which came sagas like Corpse Party (the first game was made with RPG Maker, later they released a remake with another engine) for example, this would mark the essence of how a work made with RPG Maker had to be, you would almost always be a character in a dark place, to escape from that place you would have to escape from enemies that chase you and kill you with a single touch (this was inspired by Amnesia, which was quite popular during that time), and obviously you would have to solve puzzles to advance during the adventure. Being graphically limited, there was a strong emphasis on the story to be told. And that is what "dug its grave", video games made with RPG Maker "died" because of the limitations they had. With the appearance of games like Slender, which was in 3D and caused a better immersion, these titles were left aside by the community.
Well, in a way I lied about the death of the RPG Maker, to this day there are still video games coming out and over the years there are improved versions of the engine with which video games are made with more quality, the current one being the RPG Maker MV engine, something that we can see reflected in the page rpgmaker.net, where every day we can see how hundreds of games are uploaded to the platform in order to be discovered or to be played by someone. And although you may not believe it, as there are so many games, one of them has to be good, resulting in the appearance of cult works with very little recognition or the appearance of interesting/enjoyable works of little renown, thus finding both paid and free video games, among them I can easily mention several, such as To The Moon, a paid game that strangely is not a horror game but instead tells a touching story that will captivate more than one, there is also Witch Heart, a free mystery game with touches of action that has several endings, other classics that we can find are IB and OFF, all of them considered cult. On the other hand, one of my favourites that is not so well known is Midnight Train, which has an episodic format with 4 chapters, beautiful art and a very interesting plot.
I consider RPG Maker to be a very useful tool for those who are just starting out in the world of videogame creation and I also recommend it to those who have a minimum knowledge of programming. To use it in a basic way you just need to watch a few YouTube videos, and with a little more experience you will be able to take full advantage of the program making things like Omori. I think that a lot of the games that come out here, most of them are made for the love of the art, just to tell a story to an audience, considering the fact that there are so few commercial titles and that there are mostly free games. If you know how to use the engine well and add plugins or make your own, there's no stopping you. I just recommend that if you are going to make an RPG with RPG Maker, you are in the wrong place, I have not seen the first known RPG that has come out of this engine, it is very strange but it is the absurd reality. They create an engine to focus on a specific genre of videogames and it ends up succeeding in a totally different genre.
In conclusion, RPG Maker is something that gave us childhood in its heyday on the internet and is something that will continue to give us joy in the future. It is the program that inspired many indie developers with the possibility of making their own videogame, it may have many limitations and the results may be very simple, but it all depends on the creativity of the artist in charge of the project. I still enjoy to this day occasional games that catch my attention, which are made with this engine, what really surprises me is that they have tremendous art and a very good level of storytelling, obviously I am not saying that all of them are like this, but the ones that have been more or less relevant over the years, they are. I am happy to say or I would like to share the thought, that as time goes by RPG Maker will always be eternal unless another program appears that gives us the same ease to make videogames, meanwhile we can only enjoy one of the best engines for videogame creation of recent times.
