Welcome to a reflection on the paths we choose, the people who walk alongside us, and the value of looking ahead without forgetting what brought us here. This week, the Encuentro de Talentos community invites us to share our thoughts on a major theme: the journey.

Have you ever felt so focused on reaching a goal that you forgot to pay attention to where you were standing?

There is a song by a Venezuelan band that reminds me, in a very raw and real way, that life is about so much more than just reaching a destination. It’s called "Retrovisor" by Caramelos de Cianuro. Every time I listen to it, I think about the fleeting nature of time. I find myself reflecting on something we often overlook in our daily lives: we are so obsessed with where we want to end up that we completely forget to enjoy the scenery of the present moment.

We want to graduate, land a good job, become independent, travel the world, fall in love, find stability, achieve our dreams, and become the version of ourselves we picture when we close our eyes and let ourselves dream. We make lists, set deadlines, map out plans, and promise ourselves that once we finally get what we want, we’ll be happy. But what about the journey we’re on while we wait?

What is the point of reaching our destination if we spend the entire journey watching the clock, worrying about the future, or lamenting the roads we didn't choose?

Sometimes I feel that life is like one of those endless road trips we used to take with our family as children. There are sunny days when we roll down the windows, let the wind tousle our hair, blast our favorite song, and feel as though the universe is conspiring in our favor. On other days, it rains, there is traffic, we get lost, take a wrong turn, or exhaustion gets the better of us. Our ears pop from all the twists and turns, and for some strange reason, a deep melancholy washes over us: we don't want the journey to end, even though it has barely begun. Yet, despite the winding roads or the rain, we must keep moving forward. That is what living is all about.

Looking back without staying there

A rearview mirror helps us orient ourselves and drive safely. No one drives for hours looking exclusively behind them; yet, we often do something similar with our lives, remaining tethered to past decisions, conversations that ended poorly, or people who are no longer in our lives.

Looking back is necessary to honor where we come from and acknowledge the changes we have undergone, thereby appreciating how much we have grown. However, the past should be a teacher, not a permanent destination. Moving forward means accepting that some stories have ended, forgiving, and letting go of the emotional baggage that currently only robs us of peace, happiness, and tranquility.

Enjoying the scenery is also part of the journey.

Learning to inhabit the present moment is an act of self-love and calm. The real landscape is unfolding right now: in the pause to enjoy a hot cup of coffee, in the evening light, in simple conversations with loved ones, and in the courage to navigate gray days with compassion.

Drawing inspiration from works like Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way, I have learned that when we stop demanding immediate results and let go of the rush, the purity of creativity flows; we begin to discover the hidden beauty residing in our everyday activities. Happiness is not a reward at the end of the journey, but a presence we choose to cultivate throughout the process.

The importance of choosing the right people to have in the passenger seat

A journey is not just about the route, but the company. It is a true gift to share the path with people who celebrate our achievements without competing, who listen with empathy, and who make the journey feel lighter.

However, it is also necessary to appreciate and accept that some people enter our lives only for a season—to add experiences, share moments, or help us collect memories. Learning to say goodbye is part of the journey. Some bonds fulfill their purpose and then move in different directions, just as happened with those college friends.

Traveling alone for a time does not mean being lost. On the contrary, learning to enjoy your own company and giving yourself space to reconnect is essential to avoid getting stuck on paths that hurt you, simply out of fear of loneliness.

We are not the same person at the start of the journey as we are at the end

As Paulo Coelho reminds us in The Alchemist, the greatest treasure of a journey is not just the destination, but who we become while pursuing it. Goals may remain the same or change, but the maturity we gain, the boundaries we dare to set, and the lessons we learn completely transform our perspective.

If, at this point in your journey, you aren't sure where you are headed or the future feels uncertain, remember that not all journeys move at the same pace or follow the same route. Don't compare yourself to the vehicle next to you. Changing direction is not failure; sometimes, it is the ultimate act of courage to honor what your soul needs.

For today, try this:

Forgive yourself for the decisions you made when you didn't know what you know now. Be grateful for the path you’ve traveled, celebrate your quiet little victories, and embrace those walking beside you today.

You don't need to have your whole life figured out this week to take the next step. May the past be a beautiful story to look back on, the future an inspiring horizon, and the present the landscape you choose not to miss by rushing through life.

💬 And you—if you could choose just one thing to take with you on this journey called life, what would it be? A person, a memory, a lesson, or a dream yet to be fulfilled?
