Indigo children come across as being different from average kids their own age, but definitely not in a negative light. Indigo children are dynamic souls and their way of observing the world is somewhat unique.
Personality is a complex psychophysical complexity of the individual, so it appears in his unique behavior.
[1]
This makes educating them a different avenue altogether, since the general learning methods do not necessarily work with the personalities of these highly creative individuals.
CHARACTERISTICS OF INDIGO CHILDREN
Some characteristics of indigo children are:
• Empathic, full of curiosity, strong desire, independent, and often considered weird by friends and family
• Knowing himself and having a clear purpose
• Having a strong spiritual subconscious since childhood
• Believing that he is worthy to be in the world.
Some other features are:
• Has a high IQ, has intuitive ability, and
• Often refuse to follow rules or instructions.
According to Tober and Carroll, indigo children may not perform well in school for refusing to follow the rules, smarter (or more mature spiritually) from their teachers, and less responsive to discipline based on guilt, fear or manipulation
[2]
Parents and teachers alike should already be aware that all children are different and that they do not all learn in the same way. It is up to us as educators to distinguish the personality types and guide our young learners accordingly.
On this occasion, I would like to give some steps that can be used as a guide when educating Indigo children efficiently.
"Teaching indigo children is needed patience or we must follow the character, but still oriented to change and build knowledge so that indigo children can adjust like other children"
THE STEPS TO BE MUST DONE IS AS FOLLOWS:
• Treat an indigo child with much affection. Harsh discipline and scolding will do harm to their learning desire and you will lose their respect.
• Talk to an indigo child like you would talk to a friend, be honest with them at all times because if you are not honest then they are inclined to know when they are being lied to. Fun and relaxed communication is key.
• Indigo children ask a lot of questions, be ready to answer them with patience and thought.
• Indigo children like to be in charge of themselves. To respect this and to make life easier for everyone, give them choices. For instance: "You can choose to sit near mother or at the end of the table”. This makes them feel independent and free, as their spirit demands.
• Do not punish an indigo child, instead provide more educational guidance and direction, steer the towards self-respect – they will appreciate this.
• Discuss rules with indigo children, even allow them to set some of the rules, again this feeds their free spirit and helps to avoid the possibility of them rebelling under harsh rule.
But in additional, please using strategies to simplify the visual learning process of children:
- Use visual materials such as drawings, diagrams and maps
- Use colors to filter out important things.
- Encourage children to read illustrated books.
- Use multi-media (eg computer and video).
- Encourage the child to try to illustrate his ideas into the picture:
Indigo children are often more sensitive and aware of more important world matters, especially when compared to other children of their own age. Patience and caution in educating indigo children is crucial, give them constant affection and appreciation and then they are likely to thrive.
