Around The World: Challenge - #34/3

I visited Visegrad in autumn...and of course its famous bridge.
The bridge is an endowment of Mehmed Pasha Sokolović. It was built in the period 1571-1577..

In the middle of the bridge there is a chair, it is an extension with benches, also made of stone. It is used for travelers' rest... And opposite the chairs are stone tablets with words of thanks to the builders of the bridge..

One of the legends says that Rade, a builder, was building a bridge, and while he was building it during the day, the ship's villa collapsed at night. Then something in the water whispered to him that he had to carry the twin children put it in the bridge. After the search, they found twins Stoja and Ostoja in a village. They were taken away from their mother and raised. Rade took pity on the children and left an opening for the mother to nurse them. There are still whitish traces around that opening, believed to be breast milk.

The bridge is the most important monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina, entered in the UNESCO list of world cultural heritage.

The old bridge, and it seems to me that it has hardly been touched by the ravages of time....
It has had several repairs over the centuries.

When I saw him for the first time, he shone for me...a dignified peaceful witness of the past centuries.... If only he could talk....

The bridge has 11 arches and is a masterpiece of architecture at that time....
And it was made by the most famous Turkish architect Koca Mimar Sinan.

The bridge was built by Mehmed pasha Sokolović, and the novel The Bridge on the Drina written by Ivo Andrić traveled the whole world. He received the Nobel Prize for this masterpiece.

Andrić says in the novel.. "life is an incomprehensible miracle, because it is constantly worn out and shed, yet it lasts and stands firm like a bridge on the Drina" ...

Emir Kusturica erected a monument to the builder of the bridge, Mehmed Pasha Sokolović, to look at the bridge. Because he didn't see it finished, they killed him before that.
