My latest miniature was inspired by The Last of Us Clicker infected.
The idea of a mushroom spore turning people in to zombies is based on real life species of fungi that use other organisms like ants or grasshoppers in their reproductive cycle.
The fungus can also manipulate the behavior of infected insects and make them do things they normally wouldn't do. It will make the insect climb on a leaf or a twig and bite into it. The poor ant soon dies and growing mushroom bursts through it's head infecting ants walking under the leaf... which is... nature you scary b$%ch!
