World’s first computer storage drive was unleashed in 1956 which was much bigger than a refrigerator and weighed in tons. This hard drive was result of larger machine by IBM 305 RAMAC also known as Random Access Method of Accounting and Control. RAMAC storage device can still be seen in Mountain View, California. Dave Benner and Joe Feng, two engineers in 2002 restored old RAMAC placed in Computer History Museum situated in Mountain View California which still works. IBM’s storage device built in 1956 was made to keep business accounts up to date making them available immediately and hence helped companies from veritable blizzard of paper records. Magnetic disk storage is the result of RAMAC storage device which helped in retrieval of data or information without any delay. 50 vertically stacked disks were covered in magnetic paint and they used to spin at the speed of 1,200 rpm. A mechanical arm was used to store and retrieve data from disks.
