It's a pleasure to greet you and meet again in this wonderful @hivegc community to share our passion for video games. Recently, I've been analyzing several video games that I love and have been sharing these analysis with the community. Of course, these aren't analysis s written by a professional, but I speak from my passion and experiences with the game in question. Ultimately, the goal is for you to enjoy each review.
The video game I want to analyze today is Naughty Dog's wonderful masterpiece, The Last of Us. In 2013, Naughty Dog broke away from its traditional action-packed game traditions and brought us a game based in a post-apocalyptic world where we witnessed one of the greatest stories ever created. I invite you to join me in analyzing this game and come to a conclusion about why it's so wonderful. Here we go!
The story is undoubtedly one of the fundamental pillars of this game, introducing us to Joel Miller, a tough guy who lost his daughter at the beginning of an apocalyptic scenario caused by a genus of fungus called cordyceps, which infects its host and transforms it into a kind of zombie, although the game never uses "zombie" to refer to these beings. Twenty years later, Joel becomes a smuggler with no reason to live but to survive. Joel meets Ellie, an immune girl he was supposed to deliver as part of a project to find a possible cure. Joel finds hope in Ellie, not as a cure, but as something to repair his broken paternal side. All of this will give us a moving and profound story tinged with loss, pain, and hope.
Joel isn't a hero at all; he's a broken man who has had to give up his most human side to survive a ruthless world. On the other hand, we have Ellie, representing the rebirth of Joel's lost hope and, above all, innocence, making this relationship the heart of the game. A journey that's more emotional than physical will weave these characters' relationship through every fight, decision, and dialogue, as well as unique moments like the scene where Ellie sees a giraffe for the first time, the scene where they both travel to Jackson in a van and their relationship begins to feel closer, or when Ellie takes care of Joel after he was injured and almost died.
The gameplay gives us a sense of immersion worthy of a post-apocalyptic game, feeling the need to make decisions, even about whether or not to use a single bullet, since resources are scarce. This pushes us to exercise stealth, not as an option, but as a necessity, especially when dealing with the Clickers (a type of blind infected creature with such acute hearing that it can hear even the lightest footsteps). The developers took it upon themselves to make even searching for supplies and having to craft our own equipment a task full of tension, ingenuity, and skill, but a more feasible alternative than fighting. Without a doubt, this is a well-developed aspect that also contributes to the story.
As I said, the infected aren't stupid, slow zombies, but rather their characteristics depend on their variation: Runners are fast and agile, Clickers are blind but have very acute hearing and are also terrifying, and Bloaters are very strong giants that launch poisonous spores. On the other hand, we have human gangs, full of cannibals and soldiers who will do everything they can to destroy us, being just as evil as the infected themselves. All these details will further contribute to this post-apocalyptic atmosphere.
The ending is one of the points that makes us think the most about Joel's choice to sacrifice the world to save Ellie. Upon learning that Ellie would be sacrificed to find a cure, Joel refuses to allow it, and it all ends with Joel deceiving Ellie, telling her that a cure wasn't actually possible and that there were more people like her. In a way, Joel's decision may be justifiable, knowing that after everything he'd been through, he saw Ellie as his daughter and acted like a father, but it really was a high price to pay to condemn the world. The game doesn't really tell you who's right or if it's right or wrong; it simply leaves it up to the player.
The Last of Us is one of the best games the industry has ever seen, and this is proven by its continued relevance after more than 10 years. A game that allows us to explore the deepest emotions of humankind, even in a post-apocalyptic setting, with a story filled with pain, hope, and, above all, love. Joel and Ellie will forever remain among those characters who will remain in our hearts, and more than just a friendship, we will witness a father-daughter relationship forged by situations that go beyond survival, but also having a reason to do so.
Thanks so much to the community and to you for reading this far. I hope you enjoyed this post, and if you'd like a review of The Last of Us 2, let me know in the comments. See you soon!
