The male toads started calling for the females late at night for their annual mating ritual. There were 7 males that I could see in the dark when I went to check on all the commotion.
In the many years that I have had my little backyard pond I have never seen them group up like this. It was a great photo op for a little levity in today's post, to say the least.
On the opposite end of the pond another couple was mating and one male was still singing his mating call. That had to be a little disturbing for the toad couple.
These pair look very content chilling out on top of the rock enjoying the sunshine.
These toads decided to stay in the water while mating for the entire afternoon. They were keeping a close eye on me while taking my photos up close and personal.
I can not even begin to imagine how many tadpoles will inhabit the pond this year. It is always fun watching the transformation from eggs to the tiniest of toads. I will have to do my best to get some photos of the little ones.
