By now, with the colder temperatures, most of us have brought all our houseplants back indoors for the winter months.
Getting them used to being back inside in the dry atmosphere can sometimes be a challenge. I have learned over the years that my plants really enjoy morning mistings to keep them happy during the winter. They really did do fantastic outside throughout the summer months either hanging from the porch beams or sitting on little tables on the porch.
To my amazement, all of them put out a lot of new leaves, letting me know that they were enjoying the outdoors immensely. Here are a few photos of all my houseplants which are not many considering I am a "crazy plant lady."
The first photo is her offspring which I just sent to South Dakota to my niece as a little gift. It arrived in perfect condition and with all the buds and flowers intact. She was thrilled to have a baby from my 15-year-old plant. I told her that she would have hers many years after I was gone to remember me by. I don't think she liked that statement too much though.
This is a replacement for the one I gave away a couple of years ago. I really missed having one so I got this one earlier in the spring it enjoyed the porch all season and now sits on top of my tall dresser. It gets enough bright sunlight from my south-facing window to keep it nice and green.
This little plant just flowered recently and hangs in my north window above the kitchen sink. I don't remember the name of this cutie, if anyone has any idea I would love to know. It is an extremely slow-growing plant but I love the crinkly-striped leaves, yet how cute are those little flower clusters? Love her!
This tiny plant I believe is in the succulent family. I have it in a pebble-sand mixture with a tiny piece of driftwood and some crystal stones. It's kind of like having a little, magical fairy garden to let your imagination be carried off to somewhere otherworldly.
This beauty has to be potted up and I think I may have to somehow stake the long branches up. My puppy thinks that my plant leaves are something to be ripped off and shredded. I am trying to teach her to leave them alone but she finds them to be too much fun at 5 months old.
I just fed all of my plants this morning with some banana water. I simmer the banana peels in water to capture some of the potassium and minerals that the tropical plants seem to really enjoy.
The leaves on this one are getting so long that I had to move her up onto the pedestal to keep the dog off it. Hopefully, she will get past this stage and start to ignore all my babies. I don't have any other places to keep my plants where they will get enough sunlight.
I ended up moving this up higher as well and closer to the window for more light. It is beginning to put out new leaves and I can hardly wait until it is nice and tall. I have only had it two years now and it has grown over a foot taller since I brought it home.
This was another purchase that I made earlier in the spring. I fell in love with the colorful leaves so I just had to add this to my collection. Apparently, it is supposed to be a very easy plant to grow indoors. So far it seems quite content and requires little from me which is always a perk.
Who doesn't love the huge, shiny leaves of this easy-to-care-for tropical plant? I have had it now for about four years. It had a lot more leaves but, my puppy managed to remove most of the lower ones. I am going to have to brace these leaves up too as she shredded one this morning before I could catch her.
The plant that just keeps on giving. I have three huge ones now all from the babies that are forever showing up. It is very hard not to propagate the little ones, however, this fall I cut them all off and put them into the compost pile. I just do not have enough space for any more of them.
I just love the light, lime color of this plant's leaves. This too is a newer addition to my indoor plants. I believe I bought it a year ago last summer and have taken many cuttings from it so that it would fill out more before I let it continue to trail.
I have this in a west-facing bedroom window where it is thriving. I may even have to cut off some of the long runners as they are now over 4' long. I have rooted many cuttings from her so far and will probably put them all into one pot once spring arrives so I will have another hanging plant for my back porch.
I hope you have enjoyed the photo tour of my houseplants. I find caring for plants to be so therapeutic and quite rewarding when you see them thriving so wonderfully. If any of you have a passion for houseplants too I would so enjoy seeing some of yours.
Until next time, this is Sunscape
