Garden Journal Update for April - Hydroponics Started - by Sunscape

Earlier this week, I posted that I had moved most of the seedlings out into the greenhouse. I thinned many of them and put them into larger cells to grow on before planting out at the end of April.

April 2nd, I had a flat of lettuce that needed thinning. I had already prepared the tubs with rainwater and soluble fertilizers for the plants the prior week.

Now that I had time, I spent the afternoon filling the floats with the lettuce and Asian greens.

You can see how thickly I had sown the seed. Each cell had 4-5 plants in it.

I use a small seafood fork to gently tease the roots apart. Then I dip them in water and put them into the little foam noodles that hold them in place in the foam rafts.

Asian greens:

Arctic King Lettuce:

Rouge Lettuce:

The rest of the lettuce was put into 6-pack cells to grow on until I plant some outside this month. I think I will have enough lettuce to get me started. I will probably sow another flat of seed this weekend for succession planting.

The Russet potatoes that were planted in growbags have started to leaf out above the soil. I have them on the floor in the greenhouse to keep them cool.

All the flats of onion seedlings are standing tall and loving the natural light. Thus, this is my update for the first week of April. Happy gardening, everyone.
