Rearing Caterpillars
I love rearing caterpillars from eggs that I find laid upon the host flowers in my gardens. This is one of them, a Monarch caterpillar that is in the final phase before turning into the Chrysalis. He is very busy eating a milkweed leaf here in this photo.
Diner Time
Here are four caterpillars that are in the 4th & 5th Instar stage. They are just a few days away from going into the pupating stage where they will transform from larva to become an adult. This cycle usually lasts anywhere from 10 - 14 days. You can tell when they are ready to emerge when the chrysalis becomes transparent and you can see the butterfly inside.

This is one of the four caterpillars emerging from the chrysalis. This is such an exciting moment for me as I love to watch them unfurl their wings and pump them up to enlarge them.
