Once upon a time, the Acropolis was the upper city, and it was a lively place with houses, shops and markets, and this continued as late as the Ottoman times. Even this Erechtheion was used as a residence. Can you imagine that? Living in a house with these maiden columns inside?
It was in a battle in 1687 that caused serious damage to the Acropolis. The Parthenon then was more or less still complete, and was used as the arsenal, with gunpowder stored inside. Then the unthinkable happened. During the war, the arsenal was hit and everything went off with a huge explosion. The Parthenon was badly damaged.
After the Greek War of Independence, all the houses and buildings that dated from the Byzantine and Ottoman periods were cleared from the site, only archaeological remains from ancient days remained.
Until now, the Acropolis stands barren.
