Loving two guys can become an issue sometimes. There is jealousy involved, choices to make, hurt feelings, and a lot of crying in general involved. I can't help it. I love both of them and can't make a choice.
Both deserve my attention, so I make sure I give them equal time. Actually, I'm usually with both at one time. All three of us go out together and have a really good time. Most women only have one date at a time. I have two! Lucky me!
Oh, I guess I failed to mention that these guys are 10 years old and twins. Who knew I would have twins in my life? I remember back in the day when I was about to give birth, wishing for twins. That didn't happen! Gotta be careful what you wish for, it might just come true at some time in your life!
We lived next door to their parents and were at the hospital the day they were born. Two tiny little boys each weighing under 4 pounds. They were put in the preemie ICU unit, but we were allowed in to visit as if we were family. That's when it happened!
Everyday, my husband and I would visit, sit and hold them, give them bottles, rock them, sing to them and change diapers for hours after our workday ended. They had breathing problems. They were so tiny, we were told to hold them under our shirts to help them feel our warmth. This went on for several months and we all bonded during that period of time. There was no turning back.
When they finally got to go home, we were again helping to take care of them every night after work, so their mom could get a bite to eat and a little rest. I never realized until then, how difficult it is to take care of two babies at one time.! Very difficult to do alone!
As time went on and they grew, we were there to read to them, help them take their first steps, teach them to talk, bathe themselves, ride a bike, work in the yard with "Paw Paw, and all the things that little boys need to learn.
As I said, these boys are twins, but they are as different as night and day. Lots of people can't tell them apart, but it's not difficult for me, they actually are not identical twins. One looks like his mother, the other like his father. One is more aggressive than the other. They are both little gentlemen, but one is quicker to bring me flowers (even if it was from my own flower beds) and holds doors open for me before the other one has time to think about it. Both different, both unique in his own special way!
The point is that even though they are not biological grandchildren, once a bond has been formed with any child, they are forever yours, blood or not! We were known as "Nana" and "Paw Paw". I'm still with them, but they now only have "Paw Paw" in their little minds, hearts and memories. It breaks my heart to hear them tell me how much they miss him and it's hard to know how to respond.
Now that they are 10, they are learning lots of other things. Things like becoming gentlemen, opening doors for ladies, how to count money, how to be respectful to others.
Just recently, they took me out on a "date". We went to a restaurant and when the bill was placed before them, they pulled out their wallets, put their little heads together and figured out how much they each needed to contribute, plus the tip. Well, I did have to help them do some figuring, but like I said, they are learning.
Hopefully, I'll be around long enough to see them grow into fine, strong, productive men and can know that we had some small part in guiding them toward that goal.
Be kind to children, you never know what that may mean to them!
