I'd think most think within a given time between their grandparents, parents, maybe even grandparents, and how they grew up. I'd doubt you could go much further back than that, I'd guess after worker reforms set in, up until foreign car imports, proceeding with a slow sucking sound forward of the manufacturing base leaving. Even if you didn't have the best job out there, you still made enough to live on comfortably, had medical, dental without a bunch of premiums and co pays and deductibles attached. My assumption would be most view it through a lens of that timeframe.
