The part where Alex says John then that's it, was when he first brought up John Trump but what proceeded wasn't there anymore. Why did Trump need Musk? To get inside what he describes as the X project, deep inside Darpa, where extreme groups of individuals sit inside of advanced military technologies that have been developed.
