One thing I miss seeing around is grasshoppers. I tried several times over the years to bring them from area's where friends lived that still had grasshoppers around but they never took hold. When I was a kid we spent a considerable amount of time chasing and catching grasshoppers. I've had more luck reintroducing crickets. They are out there chirping away as I type. They disappeared to from the landscape. I hadn't even notice until there was a shooting a block over and the neighbor over there said something to the effect that twenty years ago all you ever heard around here at night were crickets. That's when I realized a similar sound was missing. Not that I always had a thing for crickets. Like he said twenty years ago they were plentiful, one in particular drove me crazy when I'd try to go to bed at night. I use to swear one night I was going to get him and drop him half way between here and work, but no matter how quiet I tried to open the door he always knew I was coming. lol. A few years back I even thought about mail ordering some grasshoppers until I found out it was illegal, which surprised me. Like you pointed out they can do a lot of damage to crops so I guess there is a law that says you can't just ship them to yourself because it could endanger crops. I could see it if you lived in farmland but a city where crops aren't produced it doesn't make sense to have such a old law on the books.
