Outside of motivating stressors people who live in isolated remote area's are more prone to have grown up in those area's so wondering around in complete darkness seems normal to them. I was just telling someone the other day the story of having gone about three quarters across the UP here when I was young with a friend of mine. After we checked into a hotel we asked what was happening around this neck of the woods at night. After we got a good giggle about the polish dance over at the VFW hall he said there was a place about five miles down the road that played rock and roll. It wasn't so bad getting there but it fogged over real good while we were there and it was the longest, darkness five mile ride I'd had at that point in my life getting back to the hotel. When I tell you that place had logs for a dance floor I mean it literally had logs for a dance floor. It takes a certain breed, like having been born in that environment to make it feel like it comes natural to wonder around in darkness not scared half out of your wits. You look at some of the pictures of the wilderness looking so inviting, peaceful and serene but one doesn't stop to think of the wildlife you'd encounter or all the bugs you'd have to contend with. Moving out a ways for me would mean still lite streets and just enough distance from the neighbors they could still hear you scream if something went wrong.
