I am planning to leave my house mortgage free to the kids, it's a duplex. I'd like to find one in another school district but I guess if not it will be what it will be, at least the area is coming back up with gentrification down the road a couple miles. I often though do wonder if they'll have the common sense to put away monthly for taxes and insurance since I've seen them with literally thousands at a time they just waste. I am hoping that the ridiculous amounts they are paying for rents is enough to appreciate not having that burden and not taking anything for granted by spending their monies without forethoughts that anything could happen and don't take it for granted the money will somehow be there when the tax bill comes due. I've pointed out to them over the years several people's home where the parents left them free and clear and the kids ended up losing them. A couple of them sit visibly near me, they knew who those people were, that a parent and in one situation a grandparent left the kids the place....I say to my kids just why do you think they no longer live there? I tell them you simply can't take anything for granted.
