I got my haircut right before the shut down, it cost $22. I gave her a eight dollar tip.....best hair cut I've gotten since my hairstylist found some guy on a dating site several years ago, she ended up marrying him and moving out of town. It's been about ten, eleven years since I owned my salon and back then the weekly rate for a chair rental was about a hundred to a hundred forty a week, sometimes they work on a commission basis, back then I think it was seventy-thirty split, others pay a minimum wage. A good stylist with a following could cover a chair rental in a day. I don't worry to much about it as I get my back cut short then I can cut my own front and sides a couple times before I need to have the back done again as I've had to do quite a bit since loosing my stylist, I figure I can do just about as good a job on my own as some of the stylist out there.

I'll tell you they are some of the greediest people you'd ever meet in your life. A good stylist with a following only has to work three days a week to make what most people make working forty hours in a factory. Granted they don't have to pay rent in the factory it was just to give you a comparison. Plus they make a ten to twenty percent commission on all the products they sell, that's why they are heavy into trying to sell you products. Products in salons have a fifty percent mark up on them, so if they paid five bucks for it and charge you ten the stylist gets two bucks and the salon owner gets three bucks profit. Believe me it's a mirage about the lowly paid hairstylist unless they are making minimum wage, or a single occupant stylist who has a mortgage, utilities, insurance and similarly the like at home to cover but that's pretty rare now a days or coming fresh out of school with no following. Those who have been in the business for years and have a study following are making a lot of money.....yet if you are a salon owner they will steal you blind and each other.
