Wow, just wow, "non concrete multiple dimensional thinking", on one hand you claim Graham isn't afflicted with then you call him looney, if that ain't the cat's meow I don't know what else would.
Graham isn't doing some sort of grand standing in order to make claims in the future he often separated himself from Trump as some sort of defensive line. What Graham is upset about is the fact that he has under his belt the experience of the brutality involved with these groups and there propensity for brutality against one another. He knows what's going to happen. In the reality of it all most Americans also have come to know what's going to happen as in the decades of being involved over there our intervention has never proven to heal the wounds of hatred that goes back thousands of years with these groups. When they are not focused on hating us they turn their focus back on hating each other. It's a never ending revolving door of hate, sometimes over the most minute difference in religious doctrine.
Trump just didn't jump up and say, "okay, everybody out", that didn't come until Turkey said they were going in regardless of US troops being stationed there. The fighting was going to rage on regardless of what Trump did or didn't do, the big question was how much more involved or how many more causalities did we want to see flown back home, these are things to consider when weighing that.
The Syrian Democratic Defense forces are made up of a host of different factions over there that came together to fight a common enemy that'd been worse to them then they are to each other. Otherwise, under normal circumstances, if you could call it normal, there was the YPG, the Kurds People's Protection Unit, the PKK, the Kurdistan Workers Party, and the FSA, the Free Syrian Army...plus any other stragglers involved that felt compelled to wonder into the mess, be they ABC or XYZ we'll let people be creative with the alphabet and assign as needed. One problem that stems is the fact that the YPG has always tried to distance itself from the PKK branch of Kurds but it was established that this wasn't always the truth and that the two groups were more intermingled then admitted. The US has the PKK branch listed as a terrorist group and Turkey has them both listed as a terrorist group...but that hardly should come as a surprise to anyone since it's a well established fact of Turkey's dislike of Kurds.
Okay so we have for the most part named the major players. Let's go back to that statement I made earlier where I said if they aren't focused on hating the US they are focused on hating each other. This is about where we are at with this. The fight with ISIS has dwindled down to about not much happening with that...so what do you think then happened when a large chunk of people were now standing around not being able to focus on ISIS anymore?...they started focusing back on Turkey and ran incursions over the Turkish border then back into Syria. With the US army stationed there with them this is tantamount to "Na na na-na na you can't get us" situation. It's not like the US can say, because it has proven over and over again to be futile, "hey you guys knock it off". So that's where we are with that while faced with Turkey's ultimatum they aren't going to take it anymore, things are basically settled with the scope of containment of ISIS, we'll agree to take over any further problems with that issue while carving out a two mile wide zone that we'll allow displayed Syrians from the Syrian war go in and occupy to create a buffer zone between us and the Kurds ability to free lance over a border under the protection of the US.
So Trump took off his "non concrete multiple dimensional thinking" cap for a bit, just a bit though, we wouldn't want your head to explode at the thought he'd take it off permanently, that wouldn't be any fun for ya, and processed the dilemma:
-He couldn't deny it's a well established fact that not all the Kurds are YPG, there's a substantial amount in the group who are PKK.
-The YPG inability to completely remove themselves from the PKK was likely to never happen.
-Sorting out whose who and separating them wasn't a reality either.
-Most the ISIS fighters held there in prison are prisoners from Europe who have refused to take them back otherwise they'd be at Gitmo by now.
-There's no more organized faction of ISIS for them to return to and most have expressed a desire to return to their home countries who refuse to take them.
Worse case scenario's:
All out war with Turkey.
ISIS prisoners escape.
Kurds endangered by the move.
Process:
All out war with Turkey ruled out.
If the ISIS fighters escape if not killed by Turkey they'll flee back to the countries who should have dealt with them in the first place.
If the Kurds don't want to be endangered then they should move back two miles out from the Turkish border.
Resolve:
We simply can't babysit them all, there's protecting people yet those people have to be making reasonable decisions not to be causing problems. If they are causing problems then they are creating their own set of circumstances. This is like the small brother punching his middle sized brother in the face then hiding behind his big brother to get away with it. You really have to ask yourself is this behavior worth the lives of other people's son's and daughter's to defend?
That's where we are with this, I fully expect Trump to keep his word that two mile buffer is a two mile buffer, anymore so or any type of genocide starts taking place then I'd, and I am sure many other Americans, can justifiably understand further involvement in protecting those who'd help us but as it stands now we can't have a situation where those who'd help us won't help themselves first by not causing problems.
