From my experience with them I think location/cover is key to them coming back the next year. Like I was surprised to find them coming back up this year around where I planted them in the right a way under some Japaneses Willows I had planted and also had one come back up by some evergreens I had planted. The one's by the street the only thing I could think of was they got covered by some leaves during the winter and the one by the evergreens they got shielded by the evergreens. I do know a few years back they also came out with a hardier brand that was supposed to last later into the year and return the next year but I didn't have luck with them returning so that's why I think it has more to do with location/cover. I hardly think though that they will survive the winter in the house. The only plant I have seen do that has been this one impatient I left in a spider plant instead of pulling it out last year, it still had quite a few flowers on it so I left it in. It lost it's flowers through the winter but survive in the planter and surprisingly even bloomed this year when I put it back out. Sometimes it just the luck of the draw I think. I usually will have flowers left on a Poinsettia until July, one year out of a stroke of luck one I bought the year prior actually bloomed at Christmas, just somehow must have been the right mix of day/night hours to bring it to bloom as I hear it's tricky to get them to bloom again the next year. The last few years I've just thrown them out but kept last years and set it outside, it still has one flower petal left, it had two but the other one died right after I brought it into the house the other day.
My house looks like a jungle this year after keeping this one and being given another and the growth some got outside this year. Probably why I was throwing them out the last few years...window space has been sparse and I have huge windows...lol. I need to finally remember to get a couple more hooks for the ceiling to hang up more of them. One of my plants it took three people and a dolly to get it back inside.
