It's happening again. That is to say I'm stuck again, listening. Listening to an angels voice sing the perfect song, over & over & over again. It really is mesmerizing and I can't stop, its been at least 15 times now, one after the other and each one different somehow. I guess it's the memories it brings up. The last time it happened, the first time it happened, listening over & over, was in 2010.
After many (almost all) of my years on this planet with the same lovely human and the last four of those years trying to run a business in an economic clusterfuck, we were calling it quits.
Well, shit. It happens, right? Yep. And now it was happening and I somehow stumbled onto this song sung by Chaka Kahn.
Sweet Thing. On repeat. Better each time. Why Sweet Thing? Maybe it was the girl at work that would listen to my troubles and sooth my woes just by listening as we worked. Maybe.
Maybe it struck a nerve because of what I was losing? Decades of friendship and memories good and bad all thrown in a blender, with a dollop of sleeping in the basement trying to figure out WTF is happening. Not a new story by any means.
Whatever it was, it led me to this song, this perfect song. The music, the lyrics THAT VOICE! So I listened to it ad nauseum. And then I listened again. ;) On my 20 minute drive to work and then back home. Belting it out like a chump champ. On headphones before bed, on repeat.
There is so much good about this song, from the opening drum beat until the ending fade out.
"I will love you anyway, even if you cannot stay"
Shit! I'm tearing up right now. Then, the second verse,
"I wish you were my lover but you act so undercover."
I don't know, maybe this song doesn't do it for you, why would it? But you might have your Sweet Thing and a similar circumstance. Did you listen to that song on reapat too, like I am now (and did then)? I hope you didn't, or didn't have too, I hope you have never lost....anything. Anything significant anyhow.
You probably have though and I hope you had, have, your Sweet Thing to sooth you, as mine is now.
