Greetings to everyone in this great community, today I wish to share a nice and beautiful post. The post is about dentition.
First, What is Dentition? Dentition refers to the arrangements, numbers and set of teeth in a living organism. The dentition of organs varies due to the type of feeding done by different animals.
Types Of Dentition
They are basically two types of dentition namely:
Homodont Dentition and heterodont dentition.
Homodont Dentition is a type of dentition in which the organism have the same set if teeth of teeth. The teeth all are same and perform all the same functions. Examples of organism in this category are fish, reptile such lizard and amphibian while
Heterodont dentition is a type of dentition in which they are different set of teeth and with different functions in which an organism posses.
The teeth are of different sizes and functions. Example of the answer in with this type of teeth are man, cat, dog and other mammals.
The types of teeth under category of heterodont dentition are canine, molar, pre molar and incisor.
Functions of the Different Types of Heterodont Dentition.
• Molars: This type of teeth are located at the extreme back of the jaw. They are majorly used for chewing of foods
• Premolar: This is also used for chewing of food, it is found directly after the canine it is also very of ridge flat surface
• Canines: They are the sharpest type of teeth with pointed at the tip. They are basically use for tearing of meat, as well as flesh and can be also used for catching of animals.
•Incisor:This are flat teeth located at the front of the jaw, they also consist of a sharp edge for cutting and holding the food.
Types of Teeth in Man
Man basically has two types of teeth which are milk teeth and permanent teeth. The milk teeth is the teeth first felt when a baby start growing teeth it time ranges from 0-20 before it fall off and become permanent. While the permanent teeth is the teeth felt by adult it consist of all the four types of Heterodont teeth which are canines, Premolar, incisor and molar. The permanent teeth stays with an organism for life and even broken or removed it can not be grown again.
Dental Formula in Animals
Because of the difference in sizes and functions of the Heterodont dentition, they is need to know the numbers of teeth produce by different organism.
Starting with the dental for of man, man is an omnivores and it dental Formula are
Incisor: 2
Canine : 1
Premolar:2
Molar 3
This sum up too 8 but it is just one side in the teeth and the teeth has two jaws and the jaws are divided in two so the 8 is multiplied by four to get 32 so man's teeth is 32
For Carnivores lets use Dog
Incisor: 3
Canine 1
Premolar: 4
Molar 2
So this sum up to 10 and multiplied by 4 is 40 but dogs teeth are usually 42 but this is the dental Formula for Carnivores
Dental Formula for herbivore. Herbivores usually feed on plant so they don't have canine and the Premolar and molar are large and tight to help them in chewing.
Formula
In the upper jaw
Incisor:2
Premolar: 3
Molar: 3
In the lower jaw
Incisor : 1
Premolar: 2
Molar: 3
So sum total of all the teeth in the upper jaw is 8 multiplied by 2 that is 16 and the lower jaw is 6 multiplied by 2 that is 12 so the sum total of herbivores like cattle teeth are 28
