I've been browsing games on my android phone when I glanced upon a notification that Pokemon Pocket is now accepting pre-registrations for the upcoming trading card game. I totally forgot that I was anticipating this a few months ago when the first announcement was released:
I was immediately sold with the idea of a Pokemon TCG on mobile. I always thought that smartphones nowadays are way too underutilized. I think this is mostly due to the fact that freemium, microtransaction-riddled apps were the standard way to release games on mobile. And while Pokemon Pocket might also fall under the freemium game category, there are some features that I find interesting even for the free-to-play users.
Two Free Packs Every Day
One of the best feelings when it comes to trading card games is the opening of packs. The excitement of having a chance to pull one of the chase rare cards is one of the appeals of opening a pack. And according to the announcement, Pokemon Pocket will give users two free packs each day. That in itself is more than enough reason for me to check out the app every day.
Trading with Friends
Another exciting thing about TCGs is the collectible aspect of it. Trading with friends for the missing pieces you need is very important and I'm glad that they are incorporating this feature right away. But my question here is if they would allow peer-to-peer trading, it might spawn a secondary card market. I'm interested in their policy regarding this once the game launches.
Card Battling
Finally, there's the card battles. Many in the Pokemon community frown upon the plan to have a simplified version of the card game instead of being true to its tabletop counterpart. But I believe that going in this direction is the right move because mobile games are usually short and casual. Making it simple to play and understand can attract new players and they might even get interested in the tabletop version afterwards.
Overall, I'm excited to try out Pokemon TCG Pocket. It's set to release October 30th which is exactly two months from now. I have high hopes for this and I wish it is worth the wait.
