Tula Daan (also spelled Tuladaan) is a traditional Vedic ritual in which a person offers a quantity of a specific substance equal to their own body weight as an act of charity and spiritual surrender. The word "Tula" means a weighing scale, and "Daan" means donation.
During the ceremony, the individual is weighed on one side of a balance scale, while items such as grains, jaggery, turmeric, yellow lentils (chana dal), ghee, gold, or other prescribed materials are placed on the opposite side until both sides are balanced. The donated items are then given to deserving people, temples, priests, charitable institutions, or the poor. The underlying principle of Tula Daan is that selfless giving reduces karmic burdens and promotes positive planetary influences.
In Vedic astrology, Tula Daan is sometimes prescribed as a remedial measure for a weak, afflicted, or imbalanced Jupiter (Guru) in the horoscope. Jupiter represents wisdom, knowledge, prosperity, ethics, spirituality, teachers, children, and divine grace.
When Jupiter is debilitated, heavily afflicted by malefic planets, or placed unfavorably, a person may experience challenges related to finances, education, guidance, relationships, or spiritual growth.
Since Jupiter is naturally associated with generosity, charity, and dharmic actions, acts of sincere donation are believed to strengthen its positive qualities. For Jupiter-related remedies, astrologers often recommend donating yellow-colored items such as turmeric, yellow clothes, saffron, chana dal, bananas, or gold on a Thursday, which is the day governed by Jupiter.
The astrological reasoning behind Tula Daan is symbolic rather than mechanical. By giving away something equivalent to one's own weight, the individual demonstrates humility, detachment from material possessions, and a willingness to share abundance with others.
This act aligns with Jupiter's higher principles of benevolence, wisdom, and righteousness. Traditional astrologers believe that when performed with genuine faith, proper intention, and charitable spirit, Tula Daan can help harmonize Jupiter's energy, reduce adverse karmic influences, and attract greater blessings, prosperity, guidance, and spiritual growth.
This remedy was popular in very very olden days and today in modern times this remedy is not performed much. Its because of the cost effectiveness and such also there is no such weighing scale where native will sit in one side of the weighing platform and the donation item will be weighed on the other side of the weighing platform.
More over today we are living fast life and so few of the astrological remedies are not is much use in present days. People know their weight and they order the same weighted remedy items online for donations. Logically it is ok, but the needed vibration of real donation from the individual which could be carried by the donated items because of the presence of donator ( individual ) is absent today.
This is the reason why this remedy becomes lifeless in such way of practise and hence it is less seen today.
However, the effectiveness of such remedies is a matter of belief and spiritual tradition rather than scientific verification, and many practitioners view the inner transformation and charitable impact of the ritual as being just as important as its astrological significance.
