SteemPeak Mobile App? Kinda! 📲 (using steempeak on mobile with "lite-apps")
Mobile SteemPeak With "Lite-Apps"
I love
@steempeak, it's by far the best frontend for Steem. The interface is slick, the features are plentiful, and the dev-team is A+. They are only missing a mobile app!
...or are they?
The Google Play Store Has So Many Apps 😵
In fact, [they recently passed 2.7 million apps]! With so many apps, I can often spend literal hours scrolling through, downloading & testing, and, often, very quickly deleting many of them.
What's going on? Why do so many apps suck? Shitty UI, slow performance, horrible battery drain, the list goes on.
Introducing: "Lite-Apps" 🚀
What are lite-apps? Basically, they are "lighter" versions of your favorite apps that don't drain your battery life, don't infect you with malware / viruses, and most importantly: don't suck.
How? Lite-apps are just packaged up webapps that run like normal native apps for your phone.
Hermit Makes This Easy 👍
Hermit is a very interesting concept. It allows users to go to nearly any website and instantly turn it into a lite-app. It also comes with a library of "pre-built" lite-apps ready for you to download & use in seconds. No really, literally a few seconds per app download... 🤯
You can get Hermit on the Google Play Store
Well, Enough Foreplay, Let's Get On With The Steem-Lovin' 💜
Alright, so check it, I created my own lite-app of SteemPeak. Super easy, super quickly.
You literally just enter a URL (ie https://steempeak.com), title your app, and setup some bookmarks, which are just what they sound -- shortcuts to specific locations within your lite-app. I setup bookmarks for quick navigation to my feed, my profile, my wallet, as well as the explore & tribes pages.
Seriously... That's it.
I wish I could write a longer tutorial for y'all, but it's just not needed here. 3 steps and boom!, you've got yourself a custom lite-app.
Are Lite-Apps The Future? 🤔
Honestly? I truly believe so.
Maybe not through Hermit, maybe not in this current iteration / form, but I put a lot of faith in hybrid mobile apps.
PROS of Lite / Hybrid Apps:
- Lower Battery Usage
- Lighter Install Size
- Often Faster Experiences
- Less Vulnerable To Malware / Viruses
- Easier To Obtain, Use, Create, and Distribute (I see hybrid apps the same way I see cryptocurrency: getting rid of the gatekeepers, allowing developers more freedom to create)
I'm not a cult-member, however, so let's now look at the current
CONS of Lite / Hybrid Apps:
- Some webapps don't optimize themselves for mobile, thus creating a slower experience
- Early / new space, almost feels dumb to write this as a con, but the fact is new tech has some inherent problems when it comes to user adoption and resources. All new stuff suffers from this, however, so I expect this con becomes lesser & lesser overtime.
- Hermit Specific: I wanted to write this whole post through my phone using the SteemPeak lite-app, but I couldn't upload pictures to the post due to some issue with lite-apps accessing the file manager 乁(ツ)ㄏ, normal comment posting worked just fine though!
Quick Shoutout To
@steempeak 🤗
Just wanted to end with a quick props to the SteemPeak team. I don't want to tag them in this post (to avoid looking spammy), so please head on over to SteemPeak.com and make the switch to the dopest frontend around!
The team put tons of work into the mobile-presentation of SteemPeak, and it shows. The lite-app wouldn't work without them & their strong talent.
Also, I'm not suggesting that SteemPeak shouldn't create their own app. PWAs are a thing, and would suit SteemPeak well... Just sayin' 😉
