Besides travel and crypto, modding in the source engine is also one of my hobbies.
Source is a gaming engine developed in 2004, and games like Half-Life 2, Portal and Left 4 Dead use this engine. Source is ancient nowadays but nevertheless I like to play around with it. Perhaps because it is the only engine I know how to mod with ...
I started making maps with Source in 2016, and the first fabrications were horrid blocky abominations with suboptimal gameplay. With the feedback I received, I managed to produce somewhat better quality in the following months, but nowhere near the professional level some modders offer.
The image shown below is from a map I made in december 2016; Bothersome Flies. It is set in a war-torn town somewhere in Western Europe and offers roughly 10 to 15 minutes of gameplay. It was made in 19 days for a mapping contest on runthinkshootlive.com, and it received mixed reactions.
The next image (shown below) is from another map I made for a mapping competition on runthinkshootlive.com. It was again made in 19 days, also offers 10 to 15 minutes of gameplay and received moderately positive feedback.
Placing enemies and weapons correctly throughout the map is one of the hardest thing to perform in my opinion; there seems to be a thin line between amusing gameplay and utter frustration including ragequitting for gamers. I've found out that prevention of frustration is the number one priority when implementing gameplay. Unrealistic environments and weak combat are generally considered as kinda lame by the players, but frustration is a strong negative emotion and usually results in a negative review.
