As many of you may know in the last weeks this painting was sold for 110.5 million dollars:
This artwork belongs to the deceased painter Jean-Michel Basquiat, some are maybe asking themselves why this work worth's so much o what has this guy done to deserve it? well I will make a small recount on his life and you will get you conclusions.
Basquiat was born in brooklyn, son of two immigrants, a haitian father and a puerto rican mother. He was a brilliant child, even went to a school of gifted children but never graduated, he left high school a year before it. After this Basquiat lived in the new york city streets for two years, surviving by selling drawings and shirts decorated y himself. During this time he also took the name of SAMO as he made street art with a heavy socio-political critique.
The painting you saw that it was sold at so expensive prices was painted when he was 22, when he was leaving the streets. Critics bashed on him because of his homelessness, Basquiat never shuted up about the abuse he recieved from his father or his mothers mental illness. With his short years as an artist he scaled up by his own strength and determination, made collabs with Andy Warhol to later dethrone Warhol as THE pop artist. Not only that, he became a face for all the black and latino artists not only in america but in the world, he was the first black artist to ever expose in a high ranking gallery where before only white artists have exposed before.
