Ealier this week I received an email from Strava advising more changes to the use of there API and knew this was coming as I needed to re apply for access about 12 months ago, to make sure I still could continue to access user data.
After I received that email, I received a further email letting me know that I was "using a 3rd party platforms that are now banned from accessing the strava API".
Looking a little further into the new terms of use, I found that:
"Platforms that rely on sharing your personal workout data with the public/coaches or those that use the API to train artificial intelligence models are blocked from functioning."
From my understanding, the @strava2hive service takes "personal workout data" from a user, and shares it publically on the Hive platform, which could then be used to train AI models.
It's a little annoying and have been told by Strava that I have until September to resolve the situation. I'm currently struggling to think of a way to resolve this though. Using Strava was easy. So many fitness trackers and smart watches connect automatically with Strava, and the @strava2hive service was able to easily allow users to add a description and have there activity transfered into Hive as a nicely formated post. Services like this are bringing more paid users to Strava as well, which is even more annoying.
Thinking out aloud there are a couple of options to take:
Either way, any changes would mean having users to possibly install new apps, reregister, and even learn a new method of posting there activity.
Pretty keen to hear what people think and if they have any suggestions. With the way AI is at the moment, it is a lot easier to get the code done and working, so setting up something new is not a major issue, it is just making sure it is what people want?
