Yep, I just made up a new word. And no, even though it sounds a little bit like the creature from Lewis’ famous gibberish poem it’s not something you can skewer with a sword. But if you are a creative type you will most likely engage it in battle for much of your writing career.
Luck + Work= Lurwocky. The hard truth is that if you are hoping to make a living as a creative type the odds are 98% will fail. And if you are hoping for Stephen King-like pay days I imagine the odds are a number similar to the amount of Bitcoin I have earned from my writing on yours.com (.001465%) or enough to buy about half a cup of Starbucks coffee.
I know these numbers sound dismal and you are probably wondering what they have to do with the dumb word I made up. But, what I’m trying to say is that even though the odds of you becoming a successful writer are incredibly long and dependent on a lot of luck if you don’t put in the work the odds that you make it will always be zero.
That’s reality’s tough love way of telling you that if you want to attempt this writing thing you will probably spend a lot of time jousting windmills.
If you are like me you don’t have a choice as to whether or not your crazy brain chemistry churns out stories or not, so you may as well write them down and send them out into the world with hopes that maybe all that Lurwocky will pay off. Good Lurwocky!
