Long term, generators would definitely run out of gas. But short term over a few days or weeks, they are still the best option for power unless you have something already installed for solar panels (panels, batteries, charge controller, power inverter, etc.) We recently lost power for a few days after the hurricane. The main concern I encountered was losing the food in the fridge and not having water - solar panels won't run those. Since I have a little generator capable of powering the fridge, pump, provide some lights and charge some cellphones, I was easily able to last a few days and could have stretched it out a few weeks without much of a change in lifestyle. I also noticed during this hurricane that people don't care about the environment when their regular life is threatened. Plastic water bottles and fuel are the first things to go from the shelves and nobody is thinking about reduction.

So when the gas runs out, I'd be gathering supplies for a wood gasifier to run the generator. Probably wouldn't look as nice as this one, but they are pretty simple looking to make if you know how they work.
