The town stands on a hill that was once identified as a 'small wart', hence the name. In fact, the name Verucchio derives from the Latin verruculus, meaning wart, which identified the hill relief on which the town stood.
Verucchio has preserved two historical testimonies.
1-Verucchio is considered the cradle town of the Malatesta family. The Malatestas were a noble Italian family who ruled over the Seignory of Rimini between 1300 and 1500.
2-This place, between the 9th and 6th centuries BC, was the nerve centre of the Villanovan civilisation. This civilisation represents the oldest phase of Etruscan civilisation.

Verucchio is considered the cradle of the Malatesta family because it was from here, shortly before 1200, that the power of the family began to spread, thanks to Giovanni della Penna dei Billi.

The Malatesta Fortress
This fortress was built in the 12th century and is one of the best-preserved Malatesta fortresses. This fortress belonged to the Malatesta family for 300 years.
The Rocca Malatestiana stands in the upper part of Verucchio and is also known as Rocca del Sasso. This name was given to it because it was built at the very apex of the rocky spur that dominates the territory.

If you walk at the foot of the walls of the Rocca Malatestiana, you can see the guardhouse, on which there is a large clock that still marks the time

Being built on a hill close to the sea, Verucchio was an important point for controlling the Adriatic routes. It was used to control the trade routes at the foot of the hill by both the Etruscans first and the Romans later.
The village still has the streets of yesteryear, narrow and built between houses. The village of Verucchio is well preserved and it is pleasant to walk along its streets. Within its streets, one can easily imagine what this place might have been like in times gone by. The village has several aspects of medieval architecture. The interior of the village of Verucchio is considered an Orange Flag by the Italian Touring Club and is regarded as one of the most important places of tourism in the hinterland of the Marecchia Valley.
