Introduction
First, we need to introduce the concept of atomic orbitals.
An atomic orbital is a ψ wave function that describes the behavior of an electron in an atom.
More simply, we can say that an orbital is a region of space around the nucleus of an atom where an electron is most likely to be found.
Essentially, it is a probability cloud derived from the wave function of quantum mechanics. The concept of an orbital is often associated with a rigid orbit, like the planets around the Sun, but this is not quite the case.

Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle
An important principle regarding atomic structure, orbitals, and quantum numbers is undoubtedly the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle. This principle states that it is not possible to simultaneously know the position and momentum of a particle like the electron. Wave functions therefore describe the behavior of the electron in a probabilistic sense.

Quantum Numbers

Each orbital is characterized by quantum numbers.
There are four of them, and I'll briefly describe them below.
n
The first quantum number, called the principal number and denoted by the letter n, establishes the energy content of the orbital, i.e., its energy level.
Attention, very important: As n increases, the energy associated with the orbitals defined by it increases and the distance of the orbitals from the nucleus increases.
l
The second quantum number, called the azimuthal number and denoted by the letter l, determines the shape of the orbital and is linked to the value of n, meaning it can assume all the following values: l=0, 1, 2,..., (n-1)
m
The third quantum number, called the magnetic number and denoted by the letter m, defines the orientation of the orbital in space.
It is linked to the value of l, meaning it can assume all values between -l and +l.
That is:
m=-l,...,0...,+l
The third quantum number determines how many orbitals belong to the individual sublevels.
ms
The fourth quantum number, called the spin number and denoted by the letter ms, gives the electron an intrinsic angular momentum, almost as if the electron could be imagined as a sphere rotating around itself. It can take the values -1/2 or +1/2.
ms=-1/2,+1/2
The movement of electrons, which allows them to overcome the attractive force exerted by the nucleus, generates a magnetic field specific to each electron. This magnetic field is expressed by the fourth quantum number.

Considerations on quantum numbers
-1-
Taken together, the first two quantum numbers (n and l) define the overall energy content of each orbital.
-2-
The quantum number 2, or l, determines the geometric shape of the orbital. The following is the list:
l=0 --> s orbital (spherical)
l=1 --> p orbital (double-lobed)
l=2 --> d orbital (four-lobed)
l=3 --> f orbital (complex shape)

-3-
Orbitals that differ only in the third quantum number have the same energy content and are called degenerate.
-4-
Regarding spin number, we can say that in the magnetic field, as in the electric field, like polarities repel and opposite polarities attract.

Example
Let's take the following text as an example:

image.png

Let's break down the information in the text.

2 is the first quantum number that defines the energy content of the orbital, and this number indicates that we are in the second energy level.

p indicates the azimuthal number l=1, which identifies a p-type orbital, the one with two opposite lobes.

z defines the orientation of the orbital, and this acronym indicates that the orbital is aligned along the z-axis.

In summary, the text 2p_z means that we are dealing with an orbital of energy level 2, which has a p-type shape and is oriented along the z-axis.

Conclusions
An atomic orbital is the region of space around the nucleus where an electron is likely to be found. Orbitals are important because they determine the electronic structure of atoms and therefore define the chemical properties of substances.

Question
Did you know that the discovery of orbitals is not yet 100 years old? Did you know that orbitals were introduced as mathematical solutions to the Schrödinger equation in 1926? Did you know that the discovery of orbitals allowed humanity to design new materials, such as the silicon semiconductors used in computers and superconducting materials?

ovvero:
m=-l,...,0...,+l
ms=-1/2,+1/2

Considerazioni sui numeri quantici
-1-
l=0 --> orbitale s (sferico)
l=1 --> orbitale p (doppio lobo)
l=2 --> orbitale d (a quattro lobi)
l=3 --> orbitale f (forma complessa)

image.png

Esempio
Prendiamo come esempio la seguente scritta:

image.png
