It is very unpredictable what is best to do and how to sort out our finances. I can understand what you mean about the pension rate in UK, agree with me, I can't see myself working with over 60 years and still doing oncalls in hospital, that is ridiculous. So also will hope to get something arranged before. If you have garage I would still use it for car, just so that your car insurance will be low and also the condition of car will last longer :)
