Description from Strava:
I have been back in North Wales were I have some family. There was a big get-together that was a lot of fun. We stayed at the Griffin Hotel in Penrhyndeudraeth that is nice. This morning I fancied a walk so I strolled past the station and followed the road to see what I could find.
It is spectacular here with the mountains and estuary, but you never know what the weather will do. It was predicted to rain over the weekend, but it was not too bad really. I thought there might be a track up the nearest hill and I found a trail that takes in the old explosives works. This operated until 1995 when the decline of local mining made it not viable. They produced grenades for WW2.
Hundreds of people worked there and some of the buildings are still standing. These have extra walls as protection. There are also some ponds that were used for cooling. It was dangerous work and there were some fatal accidents.
At the top of the hill is a building with a massive pendulum that was used to test the strength of the explosives. A charge would be fired against it and the swing could be measured.
This is some cool industrial archaeology with plenty of signs to explain it.
I only met one lady out for a walk. It was slippery in places, but I managed to not fall. There will be wildlife around, but I just saw and heard some birds.
It was a nice way to start the day.
