LIVE MUSIC BassCam TOM JONES "Its Not Unusual" Nov 2 2025

Welcome to Part 3 of this Josephs BassCam footage from November 2, 2025! Another performance with the Jazz Derelicts.

Song: “It’s Not Unusual” I play a slightly busier version of the bass part. No complaint from anyone so far. These Jazz guys and this band are very forgiving, but they also have ears that don’t mind a little harmonic complexity. More importantly, I use the business and changes to communicate a significant change in the music arrangement. Bass and drums serve a band well if they elaborate on their part at the end of 8 or 16 or 24 measures.

Gear:

GoPro: Hero 11 Black Mini on a suction cup and goose next mount. This camera and the suction cup mount are awesome. Shutter buttons easy to start. The functionality in the camera software is useful to me. The two different mounts brackets on the camera or versatile. The beeps can be turned off. I'm glad there's no screen.
My biggest complaint is the weak battery, but it's used. I wish there was another light on the back of the camera and I wish it didn't get so warm/hot.

Bass: Fender Jazz Bass Deluxe 4 String… also known as “Bread and Butter.” when I was a full-time musician I used this bass and I modified it for longevity. Three hour performances on consecutive days can wear down your fingertips and muscle strength. I modified this bass to have the lightest flatwound strings I could find and I payed a master to balance it and set up the strings. This guy is top tier and did some interesting things to balance my Fender Jazz Bass Deluxe. He was actually a technician at the factory in Orange County long long ago.

Beer: “Avalon” a West Coast Pilsner• 5.2% ABV hopped w/ Krush, Nelson, Simcoe, & Krush Quantum. Great flavor not too sweet, and not too boozy. Same serving, not a new beer per song. I would be dead! #beer

Pizza: One slice is dumb.

NEXT: Our fourth song of this performance is a classic, “Sweet Caroline”. I hate it, but I think we need to play this song every time because people like it.
