Anyway you look at it costs have become associated with everything and sometimes the costs are not just monetary.
Consider what once was free and now isn't:
Water (still free from the tap).
Vehicle Tire Air - Virtually all air can be had with coins.
TV Services - Yes over-the-air still exists, but I'm talking satellite/cable.
Airline services - food, pillows, earphones, water.
Bank services - Checking, Savings, etc. Conditions apply to achieve free, but still you someone "pay."
School activities - Sports, Band, Clubs...
Directory Assistance - Last time I used this it was $1.99.
Parking - These charges have gotten outrageous, especially at sporting and concert events.
Coupons - Used to give these out to try a product, now buy one, get one free.
Online News - Increasingly charges apply. Even so anything free is rife with ads and popups. Use a popup or ad blocker and you'll often be denied access.
Cookies (the computer variety) - Tracking your every move on the Internet, gathering without your knowledge, bits of this and that and forming a collective under your profile. Google is the biggest violator of your privacy outside the NSA.
Speech - Yes, an oddball inclusion here, but in fact perhaps the most important. When was the last time you had an opinion and stifled it on account of offending a sensitive party? You fell victim to the mighty quash of society's sensitivities. We all do and somehow are forced to act differently than we would otherwise appear.
What have I left out ?
