I would suggest changing it. Where are you envisioning it being used?
Setting a standard just because someone else is doing it is not sufficient here.

For @steempeak it would be much better smaller. At about half that size or less
And seeing as you have have a description page as well I just don't see the need for 512 characters... but i do see a need for a shorter description to go along with the longer description that is available to them as well in DESCRIPTION.

It's possible i'm just not understanding what communities are likely to write in the ABOUT field. I feel like it's gonna be used to quickly pitch/describe their community to users which is almost always going to tell them what kind of content they should expect in the community.

Maybe some potential community organizers can share their opinions on what they'd write. I think it's beneficial if they be challenged to share that in fewer characters and then we have the bonus that the field is much much more usable if it's fewer characters... so that it can fit in short preview texts like previews found in links.

We have a proven and understandable reason for about 200 characters... it's the short descriptions in internet preview links. Though i think that limit is less. For example the decentralized metadata field in a post that we use called i think "short description" is 100 characters long. And i'm unsure what the metadata field called "witness description" length is... but that's a bit different because that isn't connected to a refrenceable link.
@asgarth may know the length of that one. Or perhaps be able to share what his thoughts on length should be and how we could use it.

3 letter system is actually very common and it's not like it's any more complex than 2 letter

Still ... if you're concerned about SNR this can go a long way. Even if just 5 steem.
And it's not just noise for the users... it's noise for the front ends that want to support communities.
And it is a way to add value to STEEM ... and maybe add value to SPS.
I guess the biggest question you could answer is "Why Not do it?"

I believe it will lead to somewhat of a mess unless you put a small fee on it.
But i'm willing to have a discussion on it.

I know it seems to have helped the team behind scot tribes. Maybe @aggroed has some thoughts on it.
