Will Justice Ever Prevail?
Can we trust a system so ill-equipped?
It’s not because you hold 4 phds and have a life of your own behind the scenes that it makes you more apt to distinguish truths from lies. Being a specialist of the Law doesn’t make you a specialist at detecting lies in human beings.
"Well life isn’t meant to be fair Sab. " I know. Trust me, I know. On June 7th of 2014, I wrote 3 times in my journal that "life is a fucking unfair bitch. "
Sadly, in today’s world, it doesn’t matter that you know in your heart of hearts that you are the good guy. The person who wronged you can still get away with the damage he’s done. And while you heal and pick up the pieces of your heart on the floor, you can’t help but keep on wishing that karma didn’t spit in the face of the one with the good heart.
I remember from a very young age understanding one of life’s ugliest truths: that is, that the kindest people don’t always finish first. In fact, the mean ones often do. I guess it kinda makes sense when you put all your time and energy into orienting your whole life on propagating hatred and viciousness. To make matters worse, these kinds of people are masters at deflecting all the bullets they set off. They never take ownership for their own actions.
They can even go as far as to make themselves look like victims. Can you imagine such a thing? Pretending you’re the victim when you are the one who destroyed someone else? I assume you really have to be at a high level of mental insanity to behave in such a way. Or buy into your own lies so fucking deeply. They know how to construct stories so that it fits the image they want to project. Everything is calculated. Every move is orchestrated. When you have no conscience, you have no dignity to lose.
There ain’t such a thing as perfect impartiality. Having a PhD and decades of experience under your belt still doesn’t make you immune to faulty human nature. Each of our minds have blind spots. What’s more is that we are often way better at recognizing these shortcomings in other human beings than acknowledging our own.
Impartiality can’t be exempted from bias because even the ones who hold the power to take very important decisions in our world are conditioned to an extent. They have a baggage. They have a past. They have life experiences too. And all of these factors mixed together made them who they are today. Consequently, the lens through which they view the cases that they are demanded to solve is tinted with bias.
Does it make sense to put our complete trust into one single human – or perhaps a handful - and pray for the best? Isn’t paradoxical to believe that they will make the wisest decision even though they are human too – and they might have had 3 hours of sleep and forgot to drink their coffee in the morning?
