Dear Steemit,
One thing I have noticed on social media that is particularly negative is the memes about ex girlfriends and boyfriends. These memes are usually quite nasty and hateful, yet somehow 'relatable.'
There, of course, are many relationships that are toxic so the memes aren't portrayed completely inaccurate. But why must they be portrayed at all? Why give more attention to past experiences that have left you so bitter and hurt.
Are relationships that ended really that bad? How many of the people participating in this trend have actually experiences toxic or abusive relationships. Is it a way of coping or are you picking fun at a person who you simply couldn't see yourself spending a lifetime with. Is there any real reason to say your exes new partner is a downgrade? If they are with them and not you, clearly they don't think so. There's no real reason to put them down since they came into the picture after you were out of it. It just shows you are holding onto a relationship that ended, or maybe you feel poorly about yourself so your confidence relies on insulting others. Unhealthy behavior either way.
You can end a relationship on good terms with your partner. If it was bad, then heal and move forth. Don't keep dragging it up in order to be relatable and get a few likes. If the relationship was good, just didn't work out, you shouldn't publicly disrespect your ex. There can't be that many bad people in the world to justify the popularity of these memes. And your ego shouldn't be that fragile you need to treat your exes new partner as inferior.
Let's make popular the ability to wish your ex the best, and hope they are happy with their new partner.
