As an answer to yesterday's post about "Which Is It: Murderer or Model", this is a photograph of Lewis Powell, aka Lewis Payne. He was a co-conspirator of John Wilkes Booth, the same fellow who assassinated Abraham Lincoln. This photograph was taken shortly before he was hung for his crimes.
Booth's plan wasn't just to kill Lincoln, but also Lincoln's Secretary of State William H. Seward and his Vice President Andrew Johnson. Payne's target was to be Seward. Although he gave it his best shot, he didn't manage to kill Seward. But he did a pretty good slice and dice job, injuring him severally with a knife.
Payne was just 21 when he was hung for his crimes. He left a handsome corpse. Too bad his mind wasn't filled with the same pleasant attributes his outward features were.
Such is life.
