1. Peers

Consult all the possible resources at your disposal rather than going it alone. These days the internet has put everything at your disposal. Back in the day, you had to rely on your friends or your teachers to help you in your learning. This is no longer the case now. Use Google, Youtube and any source you can get your hand to boost your understanding of any topic.

2. Deconstruct the topic

Break down what you are learning into chunks. Master each chunk. Once you've mastered each chunk then move on to how each chunk fits together. I like to draw a flow chart which links each chunk together. This will drastically reduce your time to master the whole. Generally, subjects are already broken down for you into units or chapters - I suggest breaking these down into even smaller components.

3. Focus

Do not multi-task when you study this will limit your attention span and your overall retention will be reduced. I've never gone to the extreme of disabling Facebook or other social media platforms - but if you have to then do that. My process to focus would involve just sitting at a desk for a fixed amount of time on a daily basis. For me that is usually between 9pm and midnight. It doesn't really bother me too much if some of that time gets wasted being distracted. The goal is just to do something consistently.

4. Repetition

Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. The more you practice the better you get. It's as simple as that.

5. Feedback

Feedback is your essential source of motivation when trying to learn anything. If you are not able to get feedback on your learning then how do you know you are learning. When most people hear about feedback they think you need someone else to get it. That is definitely not true. I like to do mock tests to give me feedback on how well I know something. Another great way to find out how well you know something is to try and teach it to someone else. You can also do brainstorming sessions on the topic on a white piece of paper. This will give you a good gauge of how well you know your stuff and where the gaps are. You can then focus on these gaps and get better at them.
