NGL, I get really irritated any time someone uses the phrase "uniquely American," especially when it comes to guns. I have taken to calling anyone who utters it a "dumbass Yank who's never been anywhere," and refusing to elaborate further. This isn't even the only point regarding "American exceptionalism" that I'm sick of hearing, so I wrote an entire article about it.
