I just got a gunsmithing job that was made necessary precisely by this sort of nonsense. My neighbour is building an AR-10 in .308 with a 14.5-inch barrel. Adding a muzzle brake brings the barrel length up to 16.1 inches, but in order to get round the NFA, it has to be permanently mounted, which is where I come in. Fun shit.
