As I see it, here's the problem with the infrastructure argument: anyone can make a road. For most of history, a road was simply a path so well-trodden that it was visible against the surrounding terrain. Anyone with sufficient resources can then choose to take that path and pave it, making travel along that route more efficient. Anyone with those same resources could also build a road to nowhere, directing people down a path that no-one would normally travel of their own volition.

Do you see where I'm going with this analogy? Yes, @edicted, this question is meant for you as well, and it is deliberately open-ended.
