Mathew opened his eyes to see himself on a bed. His head hurt so badly and his vision was blurred. He tried to sit up but the excruciating pain he felt forced him to scream. "You can't do that sir", he heard a lady call out to him. His vision was clearer now.
He could see her, light skinned with the prettiest smile moving towards his direction. The smile was contagious and soon forced his face to form a smile. The way her hips swayed in that silk blue scrubs was ... wait a minute!
Blue scrubs? Where the hell am I? He asked as he began to observe his surrounding for the first time since he opened his eyes. Other people were here. Some with bandages on their legs, heads or arm. Why was he in a hospital? He tried to remember but his mind seem to be blank.
Yesterday, a man was brought to the hospital just as Seun was signing out for the day. Being who she was "#tagworkaholic" as her colleagues would say, she didn't give a second thought about her date with Michael to attend to this man who had lost so much blood already. She checked his pulse, "Dude, you're lucky to be alive; let's see if you will make it out of coma" She thought to herself.
The person who brought him said he was hit by a trailer that lost control on an high way. The driver had died on the spot and so did the others involved. Matthew was lucky to be alive, his scalp was open with a piece of glass buried inside it. A surgery was done immediately as the good Samaritan had paid for it and dropped extra money to be given to the young man when he wakes up. Seun was exhausted after the surgery that she forgot all about Mich and slept almost immediately what she got home early that morning.
Hello Miss, Matthew called out to the lady who smiled at him, he thought she was walking to him earlier but it seemed she was just doing routine checks as she stopped by every patient and scribbled down something after asking some questions. "I'll soon be with you, Sir" was the response he got. He wanted to react but the pain in his head was enough to keep him still. She finally got to his bed and asked how he was doing.
How did I get here? He asked and she told him how someone has brought him in a night before with glass in his head after he was hit by a trailer. A surgery had been done too. No wonder he felt pain. What is your name, Sir? The beautiful nurse asked but he didn't have an answer to that. He tried to think of it but couldn't remember anything; he didn't know his name? Impossible! He tried to remember somethings else but all he remembered was hearing people scream and a bright light moving towards him before waking up here. Oh, that must have been the accident, but what about the events before it? Esther saw the confusing look on his face and understood immediately. Doctor Seun had said there was a possibility of him having amnesia, she, Esther had hoped differently but Doc. Seun was right.
Seun got to the office late, she had overslept. It was a big deal being a surgeon in a government owned hospital; lot of surgeries and few surgeons. The last time she took two days break, a child had died as her number was unreachable and the other surgeons available were operating on other patients. She still had the picture of the cute little girl in her office and couldn't forgive herself for letting her pass away without a fair fight for her life. Seun blamed herself for this and this guilt had driven her to becoming a workaholic. She never took more than 30 minutes break and went home late everyday. Most times she slept in her office for a week and went home just to have a change of clothes.
Edna, her best friend was the only person in her life aside her parents who had stayed pass the 6 months margin. She smiled as she thought about it. Edna had jokingly come up with that few years back. Nobody had stayed in her life pass 6months due to her person. She didn't create time for anything or anyone outside her job. As she usually told Edna..
If anyone was to lose their life at her place of work, they would get a fair fight first.
