I’m often been told that I’m too calm. I never get mad. Corporate work is a very stressful environment. Hard deadlines, multiple teams, working with people around the world. At some point you reach the boiling point.
But not me. Or at least in the eyes of my colleagues. Of course I feel the stress as well. But not as much as the others around me. I don’t let it overcome me. So I use a method to keep myself calm. To keep myself zen.
It’s too much to call it a method, or a guide of some sort… the best way to describe it could be a group of principles. Lately, I’ve been thinking of defining this method/guide. To put it on paper.
Here is what I’ve got till now:
1)Have good plan
One of the biggest things that keep me calm is the planning of my time. I plan my days and weeks and I try to keep at least of general idea regarding the month. This way I know what I’m doing all the time and I stop worrying about what I’ll do next.
I use the If, then method. Making a plan doesn’t mean that everything will go as you planned. And this is when the If, then method enters. Just like in an excel formula, or in a code, If, then helps me prepare in advance for the “unexpected”. This way, I’m prepared for any situation and I have a pre-thought plan at my disposal.
2) Meditation
When people think of meditation they imagine sitting on the ground, with your legs crossed and thinking of nothing. But, meditation doesn’t mean only that. I don’t meditate in this way that often. But I what I do is an active meditation all the time. A short breathing exercise. Focus on your breathing, breath in, breath out and repeat for a couple of seconds. I do it everytime time I feel the need. Even when walking.
3) Embrace the work
I don’t put a barrier between my job and the rest of my life. I see it as a whole. And I give 100% when I’m at the office, as I’m giving to my projects as well. I’m keeping the same vibration for the whole day. I don’t make a switch when I check in, or when I check out. I see my work as a part of my life. And I see the company as my client. And most of all, I don’t see the relation between me and the company as me and them, instead I see it as us going in the same direction.
These are the 3 most important principles that keep me zen everyday.
It’s a work in progress, I’m still trying to define the concept.
What are your principles that are keeping you zen?
