Somewhere between the water and the sky is a thin line between good and evil. I moved to this land Corpus Christi shortly after the Oklahoma City bombing. I had been here several times in the past during my 6yrs service in the US Army and thought sure why not go there to grad school.
In short order I dropped out of grad school simply because I had issues with the freezing cold classrooms. Sounds silly I know but after 9hrs of being in the blazing hot sun having to sit in a 58 degree classroom for 3 hrs was simply mind-numbing (pun intended). What's wrong with these people I ask myself.. What's wrong with me? What the hell am I doing here. Who am I? Why am I here? Is this really what I want to do with my life?
So I decided to dive in to the local "beach bum" lifestyle and from my previous post you might have learned that led to homelessness to the end of living on the beach full time. Work was always available as many a wealthy people always seem to have money to build yet another damned stucco home bigger than his neighbor.
I worked with several different framing contractors most of them being Hispanic and being a blonde haired white guy I learned fast my name here was Weto. It took several years to finally get off the sand and make a real effort to join the ranks of society especially after the long time of sitting on the island watching ever freak of nature drive by looking at me in my little box code out far down the island. Some would snicker. Some would point and laugh. Most would turn their eye away for fear of facing the reality it could be them living in a plywood trailer in a desolated wasteland.
Moving back into the city was a big step. I was amazed at how rude people were, how everyone seemed to be in a hurry. I was amazed at the number of homeless, the drunks, the druggies, the prostitutes, the mentally ill, the gangbangers trying to be all that while having their chick buy them a burger or taking the B buss to score or sell more dope. I know it may sound as if I'm being judgemental but I'm not because I'm certain of one thing I'm no saint and my list of dastardly deeds is as numerous as the sand from whence I came.
Indeed I realized one day while walking the sea-wall and looking around at all the sham and drudgery that there is no better name for this land I live in than the body of Christ. Corpus Christi has not been good to me in lots of ways but it is the place where one can have some semblance of liberty and in find peace with God. The people. Well they are just people. The coyote that used to visit me and the deer when living on the beach. They were blessings that guide me today. Even the birds still speak to me as if I were one of their own so yes this is the true body of which I am a part of like it or not.
Buenos nochches and Feliz navidad.
