SINOPSIS/Synopsis.
Jack Deebs es un dibujante de cómics que, tras pasar un tiempo en prisión, crea la popular serie Cool World. Sin embargo, esta dimensión animada resulta ser real. Jack es absorbido por este universo por obra de Holli Would, una seductora figura animada ("doodle") que desea convertirse en humana de carne y hueso. Para lograrlo, Holli busca intimidad con un humano real, lo que amenaza con romper el frágil equilibrio entre el mundo real y el animado. Frank Harris, un detective humano que lleva años atrapado en Cool World, intentará evitar la catástrofe a toda costa.
Jack Deebs is a comic book artist who, after spending time in prison, creates the popular series Cool World. However, this animated dimension turns out to be real. Jack is drawn into this universe by Holli Would, a seductive animated figure (“doodle”) who wants to become a flesh-and-blood human. To achieve this, Holli seeks intimacy with a real human, which threatens to shatter the fragile balance between the real world and the animated one. BREVE RESEÑA/Brief Review.
Cool World es un intento ambicioso por llevar la combinación de imagen real y animación hacia un terreno maduro, oscuro y psicodélico. A diferencia de tonos más familiares como ¿Quién engañó a Roger Rabbit?, la obra de Bakshi apuesta por una atmósfera cargada de sensualidad, estética noir y música electrónica de los años 90.
Cool World is an ambitious attempt to take the combination of live-action and animation into a mature, dark, and psychedelic realm. Unlike more familiar tones such as Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, Bakshi’s film opts for an atmosphere charged with sensuality, noir aesthetics, and 1990s electronic music.
OPINIÒN PERSONAL/Personal Opinion.
Es un filme sumamente fascinante por su dirección de arte y sus intenciones, aunque irregular en su resultado final. Destaca por su estética visual surrealista, con escenarios grotescos y fondos distorsionados que reflejan muy bien el sello de su director. La banda sonora —que incluye temas de David Bowie, Moby y The Prodigy— complementa con éxito la energía caótica de la propuesta.
This is an extremely fascinating film due to its art direction and artistic vision, though the final result is uneven. It stands out for its surreal visual aesthetic, with grotesque settings and distorted backgrounds that clearly reflect the director’s signature style. The soundtrack—which includes songs by David Bowie, Moby, and The Prodigy—successfully complements the film’s chaotic energy.
CRITICA/Review.
El principal problema de Cool World radica en su guion confuso y fragmentado. Esto se debió en gran medida a la reescritura constante de la historia por exigencias de los productores, despojando al proyecto de la visión de terror oscuro que Bakshi concibió inicialmente. Las actuaciones en carne y hueso se sienten desencajadas frente a la interacción con los dibujos, y las reglas del universo animado nunca quedan del todo claras, lo que diluye la tensión narrativa.
The main problem with Cool World lies in its confusing and fragmented screenplay. This was largely due to the constant rewriting of the story at the producers’ insistence, stripping the project of the dark horror vision that Bakshi initially conceived. The live-action performances feel out of place when interacting with the animation, and the rules of the animated universe are never entirely clear, which dilutes the narrative tension.
MI CONCLUSIÒN/My Conclusion.
Cool World es una pieza de culto imperfectional pero valiosa dentro de la animación para adultos. Pese a sus fallos de cohesión narrativa, sigue siendo una experiencia visual única que vale la pena revisar como un curioso experimento noventero de estética vanguardista.
Cool World is an imperfect but valuable cult classic within the realm of adult animation. Despite its flaws in narrative cohesion, it remains a unique visual experience worth checking out as a curious ’90s experiment in avant-garde aesthetics.
